The IP Detective - What is IP Geolocation

What is Geolocation?

IP address geolocation is a technique that identifies the geographical location in latitude and longitude of any internet user based on the local servers and wireless ports that transmit that user's IP address. IP geolocation is very accurate if the IP address can be tracked through known wireless ports, such as those installed at a coffee shop, as opposed to a more mobile transmitter, such as a satellite. Geolocation is used to enhance internet performance without the user having to do anything aside from simply logging on.

Geolocation allows any internet user to instantly access data relevant to his or her particular geographical location. If a user in Los Angeles wants to check on movie times, geolocation will automatically bring up results relevant to the user's geographical address. If that same user travels to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and performs a search for movie times, geolocation will note the change in geography and provide movie show times in the new geographical area. Additionally, geolocation allows anyone to launch their browser and instantly begin finding nearby restaurants or other city amenities, such as a local taxi service. This is especially helpful for business travelers or other tourists who find themselves in an unfamiliar area. If a visitor wants to shop for an item online, geolocation can help accurately calculate sales tax and other geographically based fees.

For those people who wish to catch up on regionally available content, such as the rebroadcast of television programming, or content from a local government agency, or a local university that limits free content outside of a certain mile range, geolocation is vital tool. Students are often entitled to free usage on a university network, or access to the university library or other amenities, provided they live within a given radius. Many government institutions, as a way of cutting costs, only transmit a visual record of their meetings to citizens within a certain area. Geolocation allows people who travel to attend conferences or other site-specific industry functions to quickly login and download specialized information based on geographical location.

Geolocation offers numerous possibilities for increasing the amount of specifically identified visual information. Because geolocation can extend not only to IP addresses, but also to other data, including photographs and cell phone calls, a tremendous amount of information can be gathered and analyzed about a particular locale. If a number of people take pictures of the Grand Canyon, and then tag each of their photos, a comprehensive visual archive of any given place can very rapidly be developed.

Using a series of physically stationary and verified wireless ports, geolocation allows internet users faster and more relevant access to the information they need, without requiring them to perform any additional tasks.
