What is a Dial-up Internet Service?
Dial up Internet access is a method of internet connectivity that utilizes a standard telephone line. The telephone line is run to a modem device located within the computer or, in some cases, next to it. When the computer is then configured to dial a certain phone number that is provided by an ISP, internet access is granted to the modem, and, thus, the user.
A number of internet service providers (ISPs) offer dial up internet access. Many ISPs allow the access by leasing a set of either local or national telephone systems that dial into the network pipelines that feed into the internet. Those who subscribe to ISP pay a yearly or monthly fee for access to the phone number. For a relatively small fee, the internet is available at any time of the day, every day.
Very little equipment is needed to gain access to dial up internet. Of course, a subscriber needs a computer. Next, the computer must have a modem. The modem is an inexpensive piece that either can work in one of two ways. The first is an internal modem. This type slide into a free slot located inside the computer. The other option is to purchase an external hard drive. It sits next to the computer and is connected with a serial or alternate cable. The last thing that is needed is a telephone line that feeds into the internal or external modem.
The software inside the computer controls the modem. One example of such software is the Network Connections utility of Microsoft Windows operating systems. To begin, setup a profile corresponding to the ISP to tell the modem which phone number to call to receive dial up internet service. The ISP provides the information without knowledge of the subscriber and keeps the computer in communication with the dial up service.
The only information the subscriber needs to provide when joining a dial up service is a user name and password. This grants access through the dia lup gateway to the internet. Without a user name and password for identification, the modem in the computer would not be able to open the floodgates that allow the flow of information that the internet provides.
Dial up internet service has its own advantages and disadvantages. The highest selling point of dial up service is that it is the least expensive type of internet access. Others can cost double or triple the fee of dial up. Another advantage is that a phone line is often more reliable than services that are wireless. For computers that are isolated in a lower basement level or within thick concrete buildings, dial up internet service may be the best option.
However, the biggest downfall is that it is also the slowest type. Dial up internet service has limited bandwidth. This is the ability for the modem to receive and send data. It may take up to five minutes for one megabyte of date to download. For those willing to pay more for faster internet access, cable and DSL are commonly used. However, each has their respective benefits and downfalls that require some research when choosing internet access.
